Founded in 2007, The Breakthrough Institute is a global research center that identifies and promotes technological solutions to environmental and human development challenges. After rebuilding their website in Craft CMS, their marketing team continued to experience complications due to the sites internal framework. Good Work was approached to both audit the sites framework, identify ongoing issues and propose long-term solutions.
After developing their current website with a non-traditional approach that resulted in a fragile and over-engineered set-up, Breakthrough’s team was experiencing multiple search engine optimization (SEO) and speed issues that greatly impacted the website’s effectiveness. Our team began by stripping out the current React framework, opting for a more traditional approach that utilized a modern templating engine. Once all the data was migrated away from their previous service platform we were able to audit the website to identify long-term solutions for improving speed and SEO functions.
Armed with the appropriate information and a framework that better suited their needs, we began implementing changes throughout the site to improve its usability, speed and overall performance. In addition to the core issues, we performed additional development updates that allowed for a better user experience, both from a design and functionality standpoint. Tackling the overarching framework issues allowed us to not only ensure the website’s success in the short term, but allow The Breakthrough Institute’s team to focus on usability, design and overall website improvements moving forward.
When receiving websites that have performance issues, projects must begin with a thorough audit before being able to provide long-term solutions. Our teams worked side-by-side to ensure we prioritized what changes were critical in the short term versus which ones could be implemented in the future. Due to the project’s success, we formed an ongoing relationship to serve as their long term development partner for future design and functionality updates.

“It’s been a total joy working with Good Work! Our website has very specific needs — we’re a small nonprofit focused on research, so our content-heavy website is essentially our product. Their team is great at listening and responding accordingly, and working within our budget. They’ve rebuilt our site from the ground up, migrated our servers and designed several pages. I’m excited to keep working with this patient, transparent and flexible team!”Tali Perelman, The Breakthrough Institute
